Backyard Aquaponics Project

A few friends from work and I are in the beginning stages of building an aquaponic setup.  If you are unfamiliar with aquaponics, check out this video and it will give you a brief overview of the concept.

We are building one about 3X this size in the backyard of one of my work buddies.  Basically all we did for the first day was get some supplies needed and started building the table structures to hold all of the grow beds.  We also dug a hole in the ground for the sump, and started soaking the large caged 275 gallon containers to get all of the biodegradable gorilla snot out.  The only things we are waiting on are the water pump which was ordered online, and the barrels which we will buy from a local dealer on craigslist.  Here are some pics of what we did this past Sunday.

Here are the grow bed platforms we built. There will be a total of 6 half barrels on the entire table. That barrel is on there for reference, but it will eventually be cut in half.

AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

So we are in the works on this thing.  I am looking forward to learning about how this stuff works because I am interested in possibly building a small aquaponics system myself some day.  This just seems way more efficient, and a bit easier to maintain…maybe.  I’m sure there are a lot of things to consider in regards to temperature, water and evaporation, etc.  I’ll keep you updated on our progress!

Overgrown!

Ok.  Hi.  Yes it has been a long time since either of us has posted.  We have been insanely busy at work.  But!  But!  We have reached the light at the end of the tunnel and we now have nights and weekends back!

Here is the latest shot of my garden!  It has some new additions to it, a habanero plant and a bell  pepper plant.  They are sort of in the middle squares so they may be hard to see from this shot.  But still awesome non the less.  Also, most of the lettuce I planted bolted to seed already.  I was so busy I hardly had time to pay attention to the growth of these lettuce suckers…and now the leaves a re pretty bitter.  I am thinking of planting some more in some other squares, yet not so close together this time.  I planted 6 seeds in a square on these two squares, and I think I will go 4 a square this next time.gardenmayAnd here is a close up of my cherry tomatos!  They are coming in nicely!cherrytomatobudsAnywho…I have some other posts to make soon once I get some pics!  Catch-ya later!

Mantis Fun!

A few days ago another mantis egg sack HATCHED!  Yes….300 or so more mantis.  We made a better terrarium for them, fully equipped with lots of grass, rocks, and anything they could want as baby mantis.  We are hatching more and more wingless fruit flies to feed all of our mantis daily. The original batch of hatchlings are getting REALLY big…and even though we had a few sad deaths from our first batch we managed to keep a few beautiful mantis happy and healthy.

This is Manty!  My new pet mantis.  I like him because he only has one antenna.  I think he might have lost one while molting. He likes to hang out on my hand and look around.  He also likes to hang out on my computer monitor and attack my cursor…he is so cute :D  I thought only cats would do that.  And I have to admit…i was pretty much deathly afraid of bugs up to this point…granted I still am, but Preying Mantis are freaking cool.  They are so chill.  They remind me of hippies of the bug world :)

Manty! He noticed I was taking a picture of him at the last second...

Here are some photos we took…..sometime a few days ago?  I don’t remember…we have been working so much I can’t even remember what day it is anymore…but anyway these are some new babies we let go in the back yard from the new egg sack batch.

First Radish!

My first radish of the season!  These suckers grew QUICK.  There are still about 15 in my garden that aren’t quite this big so I’m letting them sit a bit longer.  But this one is epic.   I will (hopefully) doing some more gardening and planting this weekend and updating some garden info.  Take a gander!
